Approximately 1000 named cultivars are listed, of which over 500 have been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in London which is the International Cultivar Registration Authority (ICRA) for genus Rhododendron. Registered varieties are denoted by an 'R' in the listings.

The unregistered names have been assembled from various sources including nursery catalogues, vireya-related literature, newsletters and yearbooks.
