*1 SM30 is a Smith-Mossman find with a lot of yellow on each of the five petals. 2406 has a lot of pink and some yellow on all five petals.
*2 TTYS means Tom Tatum's Yellow Standard. This selection has a strong yellow standard and lots of yellow on the adjacent petals.
*3 SM104 is a selection with seven petals instead of five. The goal here is a seven petal flower with lots of yellow.
*4 (SM30 x 2406) is a selection of the first generation cross. It has the most pink and yellow in the flower of this cross. The goal here is a seven petal version of the pollen parent.
*5 (SM189 x SM232) and (SM189 x SM232) are selections from a Dick Cavender cross. SM189 is one of the largest flowers found; it was growing in a pasture. SM232 ('Leonard Frisbie') was from Stagecoach Hill and is regarded as one of the prettiest selections, with lots of color and frills. Dick Cavender grew on quite a few plants from this cross and these are probably two of the better progeny.
*6 SM28-1 is a double. The goal of the cross is to get a double flower with seven petals.
*7 DD12 (double-dig 12) has been measured by cytometry to be a tetraploid. Is the only known selection of R. occidentale to be identified as such. It's leaves appear heavier and the petals appear thicker than on other plants.
